This narrative captures the emotional journey of its characters as they navigate their aspirations in a world where originality is precious yet perilous. With an innovative approach and compelling storytelling, the play aims to engage audiences while inviting potential investors to take part in this artistic venture.
About
In the play Passenger on Board by James E. West II, the story follows Aaron Lewis, a middle-aged limo driver and former aspiring writer, as he navigates a life-changing encounter on Christmas Eve.
While working a last-minute VIP assignment, Aaron discovers his passenger is Caleb Conway, a highly successful Hollywood director and producer. The two were once close friends and “wingmen” in the entertainment industry twenty years earlier, having “started together in this crazy-ass business.” However, their paths later diverged sharply: Caleb became a wealthy industry power player, while Aaron left the business to provide for his family.
The narrative tension builds through several key developments:
-
The Reconnection: Initially, Caleb doesn't recognize Aaron. Once he does, the atmosphere shifts from professional distance to a facade of old-school camaraderie, with Caleb even offering Aaron a job on his production team.
-
The Betrayal Revealed: The friendly reunion turns dark when Aaron realizes that Caleb’s most successful television project, Ring In The Sky, was actually based on a script Aaron wrote years ago titled The Edge Of Night. Aaron had originally given the script to Caleb for feedback, only for Caleb to steal the premise and sell it as his own, allegedly.
-
Escalating Conflict: As Aaron confronts Caleb about the theft of his intellectual property and the destruction of his career dreams, Caleb becomes increasingly volatile. The situation turns dangerous when Caleb, fueled by cocaine and professional stress, reveals a revolver—which he nicknames "Bertha"—and begins to hold Aaron at gunpoint while he continues to conduct his business.
-
The Unscheduled Stop: The psychological power struggle intensifies when Caleb forces Aaron to pick up Lawrence Ferguson, a studio executive who was also involved in the development of the stolen project. In the cramped space of the SUV, the truth behind the project’s origins begins to unravel as the three men are forced to face their shared past.
The play explores themes of professional ethics, the high price of Hollywood success, and the moral contrast between a man who sacrificed his dreams for his family and one who sacrificed his integrity for fame.

'Passenger On Board.'
Raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and a graduate of the University of Central Missouri, I moved to Los Angeles hoping to build a career in the entertainment industry. After several years of writing spec material and networking, I eventually signed with an agent and secured a position writing for a hit network sitcom. I was fortunate to write on a few large television productions, but later found myself back on the outside looking in.
For almost seven years, I drove for an executive limo service. While this was not a part of my original plan, the experience of being a chauffeur proved highly valuable, feeding my creative mind and resulting in one of the most satisfying pieces I have ever written.
